Ensuring patient safety, clinical competency, and operational readiness through the use of simulation training techniques.

Mission

  • To establish medical simulation as a critical, integrated component of graduate education.
  • To provide learners with ready acces to cutting-edge simulations techniques, including high-fidelity physiologic manikins, task-trainers, and computer-based simulation models.
  • To improve patient safety through education, team training, and simulation of high-risk, low-volume scenarios.
  • To ensure clinical competency through modern education techniques and standardized evaluative processes.

The Training Program

The Simulation Center offers interns, residents and hospital clinical staff the opportunity to train in a virtual patient care environment using simulated patients and sophisticated technology. The center contains overhead cameras that tape the medical team's efforts, so leaders can provide feedback after the simulated training. The Center plays a key role in maintaining patient safety and ensuring the operational readiness of all hospital staff.

The Center provides the following simulations:

Noelle - This teaching system combines obstetric and neonatal patient care and is designed to simulate a complete birthing experience before, during and after delivery. It includes intrapartum maternal and fetal monitoring as well as postnatal neonatal monitoring. Noelle focuses on intrapartum management and neonatal resuscitation.

BabySim - The BabySim incorporates highly developed infant patient physiological models. BabySim generates realistic and automatic responses to clinical interventions and drug administrations specific to infant patients. BabySim lets providers apply knowledge, leadership and infant patient care management in a safe, no risk environment.

SimMan -
SimMan is an advanced full-scale patient simulator for team or individual training. SimMan simulates realistic anatomic and clinical functionality. The patient simulator includes software and interactive technology to evaluate clinical decision-making skills.

Pelvic ExamSim - Pelvic ExamSim gives course educators an accurate method to teach pelvic examinations. The ExamSim helps determine a student's comprehension, the exam duration and the amount of pressure applied when examining each area. Assessing these areas allow course educators to provide individualized feedback to trainees.

The Simulation Center's Open House in June 2006 was reported in The Journal, June 15, 2006.
