1st Dental Battalion/Naval Dental Center's Advanced
Education in General Dentistry is a comprehensive post-doctoral
program providing both clinical and didactic education to the recent
dental school graduate. The primary goal is to augment and expand
upon the knowledge and skills provided in dental school, in order
to provide the best possible comprehensive multidisciplinary care
to the patient. It is also designed to develop a variety of other
skills such as practice management, emergency medical care, critical
review of professional literature and many more subjects essential
to a successful military or private practice career in General Dentistry.
The one year AEGD program at Camp Pendleton is accredited
by the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation, and is currently
in it's 7th year of existence.
Camp Pendleton has 5 residents for the upcoming year.
All five residents are currently assigned to the "green"
side with two year orders - one year in the program and the following
year assigned with the operational side of the Fleet Marine Force.
The program is 90% clinical practice with an emphasis
on a broad range of clinical disciplines including diagnosis and
treatment planning.
Residents practice comprehensive general dentistry
under supervision in the General Dentistry department. Comprehensive
patient care is emphasized within a group practice setting and provides
residents with the opportunity to consult and work with both specialists
and comprehensive dentists.
Opportunities for specialty clinical experience are
provided in Endodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Oral Surgery,
Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry to further develop the resident's
abilities to practice comprehensive general dentistry.
The clinic is equipped with dedicated state-of-the-art
fully equipped operatories for general dentistry.
Dedicated, trained dental technicians are provided
for each resident.
The didactic program is primarily composed of seminars
covering all aspects of dentistry, practice management and military
medicine. Seminars stressing practical problem based learning are
mentored by specialists and the comprehensive dentistry staff.
Seminars include review of current and classical literature
as well as treatment planning and treatment rendered seminars.
Clinical and didactic learning is augmented by home
study projects to include; literature abstracts for seminars, short
presentations to clinical staff, National Naval Dental School Video
Tape series, and preparation of a table clinic.
Upon completion of program, residents will be awarded
a certificate of completion of an ADA approved AEGD residency. In
addition, residents who become members of the Academy of General
Dentistry are eligible for 250 hours of CE credit upon completion
of their residency.
Camp Pendleton is located in North San Diego County
is with in easy reach of attraction and amenities in both San Diego
and Los Angles. The San Diego area has year-round access to a variety
of outdoor activities including sailing, fishing, surfing, and numerous

Program at Branch Dental Clinic
Norfolk, VA
The Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) Program at Branch Dental Clinic Norfolk is a comprehensive post-doctoral program providing both clinical and didactic education to recent dental school graduates. This program was fully re-accredited by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association in 2004 for an additional seven years.
The program is approximately 85% clinical practice and 15% didactic. The major emphasis is on the comprehensive examination, treatment planning and delivering/managing care to patients with multi-disciplinary dental needs. Residents receive advanced training in a variety of procedures during dedicated specialty rotations. This is a competency based program and a portfolio is followed documenting a resident’s performance on each of the clinical objectives. Rotation specialty and duration is established as follows: Endodontics (1 three-week morning rotation for anterior treatment and 1 four-week morning rotation for posterior treatment. For use in this department is rotary instrumentation, surgical microscopes and digital radiography), Oral Surgery (2 one-week rotations and 1 two-week rotation, to include maxillofacial O.R. cases), Periodontics (2 two-week rotations, can include implant placement), Operative Dentistry (with emphasis on core and indirect restoration to include cast posts, veneers, inlays and onlays), Prosthodontics (with multi-unit FPD, implant restorations, RPD and CD requirements), Orthodontics (one fixed and one removable case), Temporomandibular Disorders / Orafacial Pain, Oral Diagnosis and Sick-Call (week-long mornings on a rotational basis), Pediatric Dentistry (clinical and O.R. requirements), and Military Dentistry rotations to outlying clinics and short-term underway assignment aboard locally ported ships.
Residents practice comprehensive general dentistry under supervision of the AEGD Program Directors and staff specialty mentors. A wide variety of dental materials, instruments and equipment is maintained by the AEGD Department to provide the residents with a broad exposure to the multitude of products available to the dental profession. Each resident has a dedicated, fully-stocked dental treatment room and chairside dental technician assigned to them.
The didactic portion of the program is composed of both structured lectures and seminars covering all aspects of dentistry, practice management, and military leadership. The educational process is based upon the problem based learning model that enhances the problem solving skills of the dentist. A focus is placed on evidence-based dentistry and developing sound rationale, founded through research and clinical dentistry. Seminars and lectures are presented by specialty mentors and comprehensive dentistry staff.
Clinical and didactic learning is augmented by home study projects including literature review abstracts and a thorough clinical research project to include a table clinic and formally written and referenced manuscript. Throughout the year the residents will have numerous opportunities to develop presentations on Comprehensive Patient Treatment Plans, Implant Review Boards, Lessons Learned and Clinical Pearls. In the closing months of the program residents will also present Treatment Rendered Seminars showcasing the resident’s work in the specific specialties of Endodontics, Periodontics, Orthodontics, Prosthodontics and Comprehensive Dentistry. In addition to these requirements the residents will make additional presentations of their original research table clinic at the Hampton Roads Multi-Service Dental Conference and optioned at the Air Force Tri-Service Dental Meeting at Langley AFB, Virginia and Army Tri-Service Dental Meeting at Fort Eustis, Virginia.
This AEGD program is not production based, but rather competency and proficiency based. A resident is expected to perform the number of procedures required to demonstrate that they have mastered the specific skill. Once achieved, they will be allowed to progress onto more complex tasks, and at the same time, advancing proficiency then becomes the goal on that competency. Progress through the program is tracked at quarterly evaluations. There are three such evaluation periods during which all aspects of the resident’s performance are evaluated which review assigned patient pool, scheduling, competencies, mentor input, etc. The fourth and final evaluation is the residents Naval Officer Fitness Report. This formal military evaluation is completed prior to graduation and detaching from the program.
The residents are also assigned Military Collateral Duties which they are assigned outside of the department which range from; Coordinator for Record Review, Command Study Club, Duty Treatment Rooms, JCAHO, Audio-Visual, Prosthodontic Laboratory, Library, Endodontic Rotator DTRs, Orthodontic Mobile Treatment Unit, Lunch-and-Learn, Red Cross, Social Programs, Reserve Component Liaison, Recruit Liaison, Fleet Liaison, to name a few. These duties are handed down from AEGD class to class and are important to function of the Program and operation of the Clinic alike.
Upon successfully completing the program, residents will be awarded a certificate documenting completion of an ADA approved AEGD program. Additionally, residents who are AGD members will receive 250 hours of continuing dental education credit toward achievement of their AGD Fellowship status. Follow on duty stations after graduation include; shore based clinics in the US, independent practitioner aboard ships or group practice aboard aircraft carriers, with the Marines or Navy construction battalions, or various overseas duty stations. Note that the needs of the US Navy primarily dictate the posting of a graduate in accordance to their skill set which is required at specific duty stations.
Naval Station Norfolk occupies about 4,300 acres of real estate on a peninsula known as Sewell’s Point. It is the US Navy’s largest instillation; in fact, based on supported military population, it is the largest naval base in the world. With a military population of 22,000 the base supports 5 aircraft carriers, 15 amphibious assault ships, and several dozen other smaller cruisers, destroyers, frigates and submarines as well as several aircraft wing commands. Norfolk also is home to the US Headquarters of NATO and the military Command and General Staff College. The surrounding area of Hampton Roads supports 8 additional Navy bases, 2 Army bases and 1 Air Force base.
Historically, the Hampton Roads area is where English colonists first made permanent settlements in the New World, and was the epicenter of the American Revolution. Presently it is one of the busiest seaports in the nation and home to numerous national and international business conglomerates. It is an area that is rich in history and culture; rich in natural and recreational resources. Norfolk together with the communities of Portsmouth and Virginia Beach offer year-round access to numerous entertainment and out-of-doors activities which can be enjoyed by families of all ages.

Great Lakes, IL
Naval Hospital Great Lakes (NHGL)
is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan midway between
Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. All dental care
to new recruits joining the Navy is provided through its three
Naval Training Center based clinics, Recruit In-processing Clinic,
Recruit Dental Clinic USS Osborne, and Fisher Dental Clinic.
Since all recruits are now trained at Great Lakes, the slogan
"The Navy Starts Here" is the theme for the dental care given
at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center.
In addition to the professional challenge
and job satisfaction derived from being a critical link in fulfilling
a vital obligation to the Fleet, Great Lakes personnel enjoy a
wide variety of exciting recreational and sightseeing activities.
During the spring and summer months, Lake Michigan offers great
fishing, swimming, sailing, and camping opportunities. In
the winter months, the nearby Chain O' Lakes area offers ice fishing,
snowmobiling, skating, sledding, and other seasonal activities.
Several ski resorts are within a one-hour drive of Great Lakes.
Being located midway between the cities of Chicago and Milwaukee
offers the advantages of two major and diverse metropolitan entertainment
and cultural centers. Each city offers major sports teams, world-class

NHGL also provides the site for the
Navy's prominent one year Advanced Education in General Dentistry
(AEGD) Program up to ten residents. The program is conducted
at the Fisher Dental Clinic, Building 237. A majority of
the staff providers in the clinic are board certified in their
specialty. The following is a summary of the AEGD program
course requirements, accomplishments and future directions:

Program at Naval Medical Center
San Diego, CA
The Advanced Education in General Dentistry program is located on the 32nd Street Naval Base, Branch Dental Clinic, Naval Station, San Diego, CA—a directorate of the Naval Medical Center, San Diego. The program provides post-doctoral clinical and didactic education for the general dentist. AEGD residents are challenged appropriately to augment their current level of skill. The program has been fully accredited by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association in 2006 for seven years. There are ten resident positions in the AEGD program.
The program is 80% clinical practice with emphasis on a broad range of clinical exposure including diagnosis and treatment planning. The focus of the one-year program is providing comprehensive multi-disciplinary care to patients. There are also discipline specific rotations in the following specialties: Operative Dentistry, Endodontics, Oral Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, and Oral Diagnosis. When not in rotations, residents treat patients in a group practice setting and fully utilize the mentorship in Prosthodontics and Periodontics as an integral part of their comprehensive general dentistry practice.
The didactic component of the program comprises 20% and is composed of seminars, lectures in all specialties, labs and participation in several continuing education courses including Treatment Planning, Oral Surgery, Nitrous Oxide and Sedation and Operative Dentistry. Clinical and didactic learning is augmented by assigned projects including: Treatment planning conferences, literature abstracts for seminars, a professional presentation for the Operative Dentistry Continuing Education Course and preparation and presentation of a table clinic for the California Dental Association meeting in Anaheim, CA and the Annual Professional Military Dental Symposium. Additionally, for dental officers with follow-on orders to operational platforms, residents attend a combat casualty trauma course.
The residency is located in beautiful San Diego, CA. With the most ideal climate, there is year-round access to a variety of outdoor activities including sailing, fishing, surfing, and numerous sporting activities. It is within easy reach of many major attractions both in San Diego and Los Angeles. The city also provides many fine arts and cultural events, as well as major league sport teams and many outstanding restaurants. It is located only 13 miles from the border with Mexico.
At the conclusion of the year, residents will be awarded a certificate in recognition of the successful completion of an ADA accredited AEGD residency. In addition, residents who become members of the Academy of General Dentistry are eligible for 150 hours of CE credit towards achieving Fellowship status.

The Bethesda Advanced Education in General Dentistry program is located at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School, the heart of Navy dental education. AEGD residents have the unique opportunity to work with preeminent specialists in all areas of dentistry in an environment that fosters professional growth, leadership development, and personal satisfaction. The residency is designed to expand the knowledge and clinical expertise of recent dental school graduates and affords opportunities to observe and treat a wide range of oral conditions. The program was accredited by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association in 2005 for seven years, and typically accepts 2-3 residents.
The goals of this program are to enhance each resident's:
a. Competence/proficiency in the various clinical disciplines of general dentistry.
b.
Ability to make sound judgments in arriving at a diagnosis, planning treatment, making decisions during the course of treatment, and assessing post-treatment outcomes.
c.
Ability to interact with all health practitioners treating the patient by acting as the coordinator of the patient’s total oral health care.
d.
Competence in managing staff, materials and delivery of care in a modern military dental practice.
The program is 90% clinical practice with an emphasis on comprehensive diagnosis and treatment planning. Residents will learn to think critically, to develop an evidence-based philosophy of treatment planning and clinical care, and to treat complex multi-disciplinary cases. Rotations in Oral Surgery, Pediatric and Special Needs Dentistry, Orofacial Pain, Acute Care and Hospital Dentistry are interspersed with the resident’s own comprehensive general dentistry practice. When not in rotations, residents treat patients in a group practice setting and fully utilize the mentorship in the NPSD Comprehensive Dentistry, Endodontics, Prosthodontics, Oral Surgery, Periodontics and Orthodontics Departments as an integral part of their post-graduate education.
The didactic component of the AEGD is composed of seminars, lectures, labs and participation in continuing education courses. The Fall Semester didactic curriculum focuses on all aspects of comprehensive treatment planning. It is meant to reinforce and build on the resident’s current knowledge and understanding of all aspects of general dentistry, and to encourage critical thinking and evaluation of peer-reviewed literature. Residents are not “spoon-fed” information or told what to think; rather, they are challenged to formulate their own evidence-based practice philosophy and be able to discuss their ideas intelligently.
The Spring Semester didactic curriculum expands upon the first semester’s objectives by focusing on more advanced and current techniques in general dentistry. Students have the opportunity to help develop and lead seminars that are based on topics of interest that they suggest. Residents will also prepare and deliver presentations on various topics including treatment of medically compromised patients, comprehensive treatment planning, and will deliver a formal lecture on a topic of their choice at the culmination of their residency. All in all, the AEGD didactic curriculum helps general dentists to improve their critical evaluation and thinking skills, become more confident and competent providers, and prepare themselves for comprehensive dental practice in the fleet and beyond.

at 2D Dental Battalion/Naval Dental Center, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina,
is a one year comprehensive post doctoral program providing clinical and
didactic education to the recent dental school graduate. Its primary goal
is to augment and expand the knowledge and skills developed in dental
school to allow the new Dental Officer to provide the best possible
comprehensive dental care to the patient. The program is also designed
to develop a variety of other skills such as practice management, military
leadership, emergency medical care, critical review of professional literature.
The Comprehensive Dentistry Specialty Advisor supervises all
Navy AEGD Programs at the National Naval Dental Center, Bethesda, MD.
The program at 2D Dental Battalion/Naval Dental Center, Camp Lejeune, North
Carolina, has been accredited by the Council on Dental Education of the
American Dental Association.
2D Dental Battalion/Naval Dental Center, Camp Lejeune, North
Carolina will train 4-8 residents each year. Currently, residents are
assigned a three year tour at Camp Lejeune with the first year solely
dedicated to the AEGD Program.

supervision of the AEGD Program Director at the Mainside Dental Clinic.
The clinic has state of the art operatories fully equipped for general
dentistry. A wide variety of dental materials and equipment is maintained
in the AEGD Department to provide the residents with a broad exposure

resident has a dedicated dental technician trained in expanded functions.
The program is 90% clinical practice with an emphasis on
a broad range of clinical disciplines including diagnosis and treatment
planning. Comprehensive patient care is emphasized within a group practice
setting providing the residents with the opportunity to consult and work
with both specialists and comprehensive dentists. Specialty rotations
in Oral Surgery, Endodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics and Pediatric
Dentistry augment the training received by the residents.

treatment planning, and material selection during the course of
treatment and while assessing post-treatment outcomes.
3. An ability to interact with all health care providers treating
the patient by acting as the coordinator of the patient’s
total oral health care.
4. An understanding of the Navy Dental Corps’ dental practice
model involving staff, materials, patient, and program management
to increase overall productivity and efficiency of quality health
care delivery.
The American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation
has granted the program full accreditation status. The Commission
is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States
Department of Education. Upon completion of the program, residents
will be awarded a certificate certifying completion of an ADA
approved AEGD residency. Additionally, residents who are AGD members
will receive 250 hours of continuing dental education credit toward
achievement of Fellowship.
