Director: Commander Terry D. Webb This 2-year program involves study of the morphology, physiology, and pathology of the human dental pulp and periradicular tissues. It encompasses the basic clinical sciences, including biology of the normal pulp, and the etiology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and injuries of the pulp and associated periradicular conditions. Completion of the program qualifies the resident for participation in the written portion of the American Board of Endodontics examination. After passing the written examination and conducting a practice limited to endodontics for an additional 2 years, the endodontist is eligible to participate in the clinical and oral examinations leading to Board certification. The curriculum also includes military subjects that enable dental officers to undertake contingency roles and to perfect their skills in military leadership and personnel management.

Current Literature Seminar Each month, the residents review the scientific literature for articles of interest to endodontics. All articles in the Journal Of Endodontics are reviewed. The other journals reviewed are listed below. When an article is chosen for review, a resident writes an abstract that is placed in a database. From these, selected abstracts will be published on the Current Literature page of this web site. Journals reviewed monthly:
Classical Literature Seminar There are 28 separate classical literature seminars. The residents either chair these seminars or abstract classical articles for discussion during the seminar. They also prepare short reports on selected topics during the year. Each resident is expected to chair several seminars and direct discussion. The topics of these seminars are listed below:
Research Each resident is expected to complete
a research project during the two year program. Approximately 3
hours each week are dedicated to this endeavor. The topic is selected
by the resident and pertains to the field of endodontics. Assistance
is provided by the staff mentor and the Research Department at NPDS. All residents write an additional paper. This paper may be a review of their research topic, a clinical update, or a review of another topic of interest in endodontics. First year residents write a report on the history and philosophy of endodontics. Master's Program The Naval Postgraduate Dental School offers a Master of Science in Health Sciences degree, Oral Biology (with a concentration in endodontics) through The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. The required courses for this program are taught by The George Washington University faculty on the premises of Naval Postgraduate Dental School.
