Otolaryngology-Head
and Neck Surgery Clerkship
The purpose of the Otolaryngology-Head
and Neck Surgery clerkship is to teach the student basic ear, nose,
and throat medicine from a symptom-oriented approach and have the student
master basic head and neck physical examination, procedural, and data
evaluation skills.
Schedule:
Students are assigned to
one of the two ENT teams at WRNMMC. This rotation provides the student
with experience in facial aesthetic surgery, neurotology, laryngology,
rhinology, and head and neck oncologic surgery. The student is expected
to make rounds with residents and faculty, attend weekly teaching conference,
and take an active role in patient care.
Education Goals / Core Clinical Competencies:
1. Knowledge Base Objectives:
a. To learn basic ear,
nose, and throat (ENT) medicine and surgery from a symptom-oriented
approach
b. To learn to take a complete ENT history
c. To learn relevant ear, nose, throat, head, and neck anatomy
d. To learn treatment of basic ENT problems
e. To learn to formulate a differential diagnosis for each patient
f. To learn to recognize airway emergency
2. Physical Exam Skills Objectives:
a. To perform a complete
head and neck exam
b. To learn proper use of the head mirror
c. To learn use of tuning forks
d. To learn correct evaluation and management of anterior epistaxis
3. Procedure Objectives:
a. To repair simple facial
lacerations using standard cosmetic techniques
b. To learn proper use of the flexible fiberoptic laryngoscope
c. To learn treatment of anterior epistaxis
d. To learn appropriate use of various biopsy techniques
4. Data Evaluation Objectives
a. To learn to read a
sinus CT scan
b. To recognize relevant temporal bone anatomy
c. To learn to read and understand an audiogram
d. To learn to read a soft tissue lateral neck x-ray
