INTERN SELECTION PROCESS:

As described in General Information, all residents are members of the United States military (Army and Navy, with Air Force in Academic Year 2007-2008). Entry into the program requires a military obligation through USUHS or the HPSP program. Since all residents are active duty military, eligibility requirements for military membership apply to residents, including citizenship status. Our program does not grant Visas to foreign students.

Students applying to the program complete an ERAS application, which is used by most programs in the country. Additionally, students complete applications via the respective service’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) policies. For details, see:

Service applications are typically due in September, although “rank lists” of the programs can be modified beyond the date that the application is due, according to specific service policies. Selection of student candidates in the military residencies, however, is different than that used for most civilian programs (the National Resident Matching Program; NRMP). In contrast to the NRMP, resident and intern selection for military residencies is performed at the Joint Graduate Medial Education Selection Board (JGMESB), which occurs in late November or early December each year. This is a joint-service Board; attended by members of all services, and all services are involved in candidate selection for all programs. The results of the Selection Board, once approved by the individual service Surgeons General, are typically released in December or January. After the information is released, students are informed, and the service-specific GME office at the individual facilities (Walter Reed Army Medical Center for Army students, and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for Navy students) periodically provide information to the upcoming residents as the program start approaches. Residents/interns typically report near the middle of June for a comprehensive orientation program prior to the actual start of training.

Fourth-Year Clerkships, Interviews:

Our program, like most DoD residency programs, provides for clerkship rotations during the fourth year of medical school. These rotations provide for extensive contact between the students and the residents and faculty, allowing the “program” to assess the student, as well as allowing the student to assess the “program” relative to the student’s choice of location for residency training. These rotations also provide opportunities for interviews, although rotations are certainly not mandatory for interviewing. During these rotations, students are encouraged to interact with as many of the program personnel as possible, in order to develop a “feel” for the program and its attributes. Fourth-year clerkships are arranged through the Director of Clinical Clerkships for the Fourth Year students in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at USUHS. See Contacts.

Interviews with the Program Director, for fourth year students, can be arranged by contacting the Residency Coordinator, 301-295-2048, email.
