HOW TO APPLY
FOR A NAVY INTERNSHIP

To apply for a Navy Psychology Internship at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center , Bethesda or Naval Medical Center, San Diego:

Required Documents

1) APPIC Standardized Internship Application form (APPI, parts I & II). Application forms for the current year may be found on the APPIC web site.

2) Curriculum Vitae: clinical experiences, research experience, publications, listing honors, and other information relevant to your training in psychology.

3) Official transcripts for all college and graduate level courses. (Transcripts should be sealed and signed by the originating institutions).

4) Three supporting letters from professors, program directors, and supervisors familiar with your academic performance, psychological skills, and supervised clinical experiences. Note: Letters of Reference should be submitted in a sealed envelope with signatures of the writers over the back flap to ensure authenticity.

5) Documents required for commissioning as a naval officer. (The recruiter will help you assemble these documents).

All required documents, including the APPI, will be forwarded by your local Medical Programs Recruiter to the National Director via the Navy Recruiting Command in Millington, TN.

** APPLY EARLY!**
Note: Applications must be completed by 30 November 2008. Due to the extra steps involved in applying for a Navy internship, prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to contact their local Navy Medical Programs Officer Recruiter by mid-September or earlier to start the application process. Later contact is permitted, but increases the chances of not completing the application in time to meet the 30 November deadline date. The Navy board that selects interns meets in early January.

The Interview Process

All applicants for the Navy’s psychology internship program who meet the physical and background qualifications for officer commissioning are invited for an interview.

Funding permitting, the Navy will pay for you to travel to one of the two sites for an interview. (Your recruiter will have more information.) Applicants are encouraged to visit at least one of the two internship sites for a personal interview.

Interviews will be conducted at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center , Bethesda on 11 and 12 December 2007. Naval Medical Center, San Diego will conduct interviews on 9 and 10 January 2008. Your Medical Programs Recruiter will make the arrangements for you to be interviewed on one of these dates.

Individuals who are unable to schedule interviews on these dates can also schedule interviews on a case-by-case basis. See Contacts below to schedule interviews on dates other than those stated above.

Additional Application Components

In addition to completing and sending in items # 1-4 above, you will also be required to pass certain physical and background screenings. These will be addressed by your recruiter but are mentioned here for your information. Note: This is not an exhaustive list of all requirements but is provided merely to elaborate on the process.

Additional requirements include, among others:

• A complete physical coordinated by your recruiter at an Armed Forces Medical Center.

• A complete background investigation including all educational, vocational, and domicile information for the last ten years.

• Criminal background check.

• Proof of United States Citizenship (often a birth certificate or citizenship papers).

• Other requirements might also apply, ask your recruiter for more information.
