When communication is impaired...

A broad spectrum of services are provided by a team of specialists:

Speech assessment (voice fluency, rate, articulation, dialect)

Language/cognitive-linguistic assessment (aphasia from stroke, R CVA, TBI, etc)

Communication therapy (speech and language disorders) for inpatient and outpatient adults and inpatient children. Outpatient pediatric cases are referred to the county/city school systems or to a TRICARE advisor for therapy support.

Swallowing/ feeding assessment and therapy for inpatient and outpatient adults. Pediatric feeding assessments available on a limited basis with referral/ counsel; however, pediatric therapy is not available.

Community liaison, after assessments or transfer of patient care, with

  • Schools
  • Hospital or community speech pathology clinics
  • Private therapy sources
  • Nursing homes
  • Rehabilitation centers

Education of hospital staff, families, patients and their families.

Advanced diagnostic and treatment tools include:

Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) studies for adults and children. A videofluroscopic imaging chair is available for these studies making positioning of the patient easier and safer.

Fiberoptic Endoscopy Evaluation of Swallow (FEES) used with physician participation to evaluate swallow.

VISI-PITCH voice analysis provides an objective analysis of voice parameters.

Alternative communication methodologies such as the use of a speaking voice for tracheostomy patients, design/modification of oral appliances, use of electrolarynx, etc.
