WRNMMC to Graduate 355 Intern, Resident and Fellow Physicians
Bethesda, Md. – On Friday the Navy and Marine Corps will have 355 newly-minted graduate physicians, many headed immediately overseas to support the Global War on Terrorism. This year, most of the intern class will be going directly to operational billets aboard ship and with the Marine Corps. Others will be assigned to hospitals and operational units throughout the Navy and Marine Corps.
WRNMMC will hold a ceremony to graduate the Interns, Residents and Fellows from WRNMMC, National Capital Consortium and Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The graduation will commence at 10:00 a.m., Friday, 18 June 2004.
VADM Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.S., United States Surgeon General and Commander, USPHS Commissioned Corps, will be the keynote speaker. The Washington Navy Band will provide musical selections.
Graduate Medical Education programs train physicians in their selected specialty to support the mission of the Navy and Marine Corps. In addition, trainees prepare for board eligibility and certification. All of the training programs are accredited by the American Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Former notable graduates include the late CAPT Laurel Blair Salton-Clark, MC, USN (Pediatrics, 1987-8), who perished aboard the space shuttle Columbia in 2003, and WRNMMC’s current commander, RADM Donald Arthur, a former surgical intern.
The 66 GME programs at WRNMMC, Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC), Malcolm Grow Medical Center and the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences are part of the National Capital Consortium. Students benefit from educational and clinical training opportunities at all three medical centers.
